Chrome Hearts
Choosing Chrome Hearts is a considered decision. So is knowing where to find them. Gates Eyewear holds the exclusive New Zealand stockist relationship with Chrome Hearts, bringing one of the world’s most distinctive eyewear brands to our Remuera practice.
The Chrome Hearts Story
Chrome Hearts began in Los Angeles in 1988, when Richard Stark started making custom leather motorcycle gear for riders who wanted something built with genuine craft rather than mass-produced convenience. What started in a garage became one of the most distinctive names in luxury not because of a marketing strategy, but because of an uncompromising commitment to handmade quality and a refusal to follow convention.
The brand expanded steadily into jewellery, clothing, accessories and eyewear, each category carrying the same hallmarks: sterling silver hardware, gothic cross motifs, hand-finished detailing and a deliberate resistance to mainstream distribution. Chrome Hearts does not sell everywhere. That is by design. The brand controls where its products appear, which means finding them requires knowing where to look.
In Auckland, that place is Gates Eyewear.

Chrome Hearts Eyewear Design Philosophy
Chrome Hearts frames are not designed to blend in. The brand carries its wider aesthetic directly into its eyewear: bold silhouettes, sterling silver detailing, gothic motifs and a visual weight that sets them apart from anything produced at scale. These are frames that function as wearable objects of craft as much as corrective or protective eyewear.
The design philosophy treats eyewear as an extension of personal identity rather than a functional accessory. Chrome Hearts draws on its roots in custom craft and counterculture to produce frames that carry meaning for those who choose them. Pieces that reflect both the maker’s ethos and the wearer’s own sense of style.
Craftsmanship and Materials
Chrome Hearts builds its reputation on handcrafted production and premium materials. The brand’s use of sterling silver hardware is a consistent thread across its collections, lending the eyewear a weight and presence that machine-produced frames cannot replicate. Where other brands treat the frame as a vehicle for a logo, Chrome Hearts treats it as the object itself.
The limited production model matters here. These frames are not manufactured to meet mass-market volume. The controlled output is part of what gives Chrome Hearts its character and part of why securing them requires access to the right stockist.

Who Chrome Hearts Eyewear Suits
Chrome Hearts eyewear suits people who have a clear sense of their own aesthetic and are not interested in wearing what everyone else wears. These are frames for those who view eyewear as a considered choice: something that carries weight, reflects taste and holds its own as a design object.
If you are drawn to craft over commodity, to bold design over safe convention, and to pieces that reward attention rather than demand it, Chrome Hearts belongs in your frame selection. The brand has built a following among those who take quality seriously and expect their accessories to reflect that.
